New Delhi, 12April, 2013: All India Management Association (AIMA), the apex body of Indian management professionals, conferred theManaging India Awards2013 last night at Taj Palace Hotel, New Delhi.The awards celebrated achievements of outstanding companies, entrepreneurs and managers who have made salutary contribution to nation building.

President of India, Pranab Mukherjee was the Chief Guest on the occasion and gave away the awards at a glittering ceremony.

 

Speaking on the occasion, the President congratulated the award winners for contributing to the country’s progress and expressed hope that they would ignite the minds of other managers and entrepreneurs to think big towards nation building. He said that he had unshakable faith in bright future of the Indian economy and the winners of Managing India Awards exemplified that conviction.

 

The President stated that the country needed visionary business leaders to manage India’s transition to a knowledge economy. He said that the country also required the Indian industry to act as a catalyst for deepening our growth process.

 

The President pointed out that to mark India’s growing stature, management principles should find application not only in business and industry but also in other important processes such as social change and governance. He said that how change is managed would determine our progress. This was a need that the Managing India Awards denoted and this was also a reality epitomized by this year’s award winners, he added.

 

The President commended AIMA for setting up the Centre for Skill Development and Training while saying that all-round efforts were necessary to develop the country’s workforce as a partner in progress. He stated that greater numbers of technical institutes were required to be set up and the existing technical institutes that lag behind in quality had to be upgraded.

 

The President emphasized the need for technology development and upgrade. He said that technology would determine our domestic industry’s ability to beat competition. He added that our research and innovation efforts must aim at technology up-gradation to simplify production processes, improve quality and seek efficiency gains.

Appreciating the Managing India Awards, DrPrannoy Roy, Executive Co-Chairperson and Editor-in-Chief, NDTV said, “This award means a great deal to me. I seldom accept awards but this is special as it comes from a most respected body of Indian industry.” Speaking on the significant role played by the media in nation building he said, “Media has made politicians answerable to the people of India. Indian media has brought information to the voters of India on development or lack of it and on issues that affect their lives. All this is making our country a more vibrant and informed democracy.”

 

Karl Slym, Managing Director, Tata Motors,credited strong roots of Tata Motors for its ability to grow at home and overseas. “We have unique strengths and competitive advantages from operating in the Indian environment and from the local entrepreneurial culture.It is important that we use this to play to win on the global stage,” he said.

 

BhaskarBhat, Managing Director, Titan Industries attributed his success to the people whose aims and aspirations have led to transformation of Titan from a watchmaker to jeweler to eyewear specialist and to a maker of lifestyle products. Describing his vision for the company, he said, “It’s Titan’s desire to be a healthy, wealthy, sharing, caring, clean and green company that is the envy of global companies.”

 

Chairman & Co-Founder, Jubilant BhartiaGroup,Shyam S amantra of success to young entrepreneurs saying, “If you strongly believe in your plan, work hard to get together a cohesive and motivated team to crystallize your plan and go ahead and implement it without fear of failure.”

 

Hari S Bhartia, Co-Chairman & Founder, Jubilant Bhartia Groupasserted that Indian companies had the potential to be on par with the global giants in both scale and brand recognition. “Our strategy has always been ‘Think global and act local’ and it has proved to be highly beneficial,” he said.

 

PawanMunjal, Managing Director and CEO, Hero MotoCorpLtd, emphasized that to be a business leader one had to believe in the power of people and to understand the importance of humility. “My biggest strength has been the large pool of talented people within the company. Over the years, I have personally chosen, nurtured and empowered many of them to take up leadership roles within the company. “

 

Commenting on the award for BHEL, the company Chairman & Managing Director, BP Raosaid, “BHEL has been contributing to nation building endeavors for almost half a century in line with Pandit Nehru’s dream of developing indigenous capabilities in heavy electrical equipment and power plant equipment manufacturing.”He said that he was confident of the company overcoming the challenge of growth deceleration using its strong technological and manufacturing base, rich experience in Indian conditions, and sound management.
