04, July 2015: A new study has revealed that over half of British holidaymakers are unclear about healthcare regulations in Europe when it comes to using their EU medical card. Experts from authority website All About EHIC have expressed concern at these new statistics, and have urged holidaymakers to do their research before leaving the UK for their holidays.

Concerns about British holidaymakers’ failure to adequately cover themselves with travel insurance have been growing among experts, and their concern is borne out after the results of this new survey have come to light. The study revealed that up to 50% of Brits believe that they would be eligible to receive free medical care if they were to fall ill anywhere in Europe.

The study also revealed a lack of understanding among British tourists regarding the EU medical card and exactly what healthcare holidaymakers can claim with it. Many believed the card would guarantee them free medical assistance anywhere in Europe, while a further 5% thought the protection of an EHIC card extended to any country in the world.

A spokesperson from All About EHIC commented, “We simply cannot stress the importance of British holidaymakers doing their research into what an EU medical card does and doesn’t entitle them too. The easiest way to do this is to have a look at our website, where we present the most up to date regulations in a clear and easy-to-understand way. Too many tourists are being caught abroad without correct medical cover and are ending up with huge bills as a result.”

The survey has further added to experts concerns as it revealed that 21% of Brits who have already travelled in Europe have no idea what an EHIC card is or how they would go about applying for one. Only 54% who have been abroad are aware that that the EHIC card is both free and easy to obtain.
