Orlando, FL— July 2, 2015 — The researchers at the integrated health care organization Kaiser Permanente, found in their study that diabetic patients who undergo total knee replacement procedures were more susceptible to post-surgical complications than those who did not have diabetes. However, it seems that the findings of new research don’t seem to agree with this.
A study contradicted the earlier research that found diabetes can result in poor surgical outcomes. An example of the previous study was conducted by Duke University in 2009, and it found that patients who suffered from Type 1 or 2 diabetes had experienced more risk of postoperative stroke as well as wound infection than those who had no diabetes.
“The hallmark of diabetes, which is the presence of high levels of glucose in the blood, is believed to cause post-surgical complications as it negatively affects processes and organs in the body,” said VitaBreeze Supplements spokesperson, Michelle O’Sullivan.
Annette L. Adams, PhD, research scientist from the Kaiser Permanente Southern California Department of Research and Evaluation, stated that they were surprised at the findings. They thought that individuals with higher blood sugar were more likely to have postoperative complications.
The study, which Adams and her colleagues conducted, involved a review of the electronic health records of over 40,000 patients from Kaiser Permanente. Those patients had a first time knee replacement surgery between 2001 and 2009. There were about 81 percent of the patients without diabetes, 12.5 percent who had controlled diabetes and 6.2 percent who had uncontrolled diabetes.
“The researchers took into account the three main surgical outcomes in all of the patients with knee replacement, such as blood clots in the lungs or legs, deep infection and revision surgery,” added O’Sullivan.
The rates of heart attack and hospitalization within a year after the procedure were also considered. It was found that there were fewer than 1 percent who developed a blood clot or deep infection and slightly more than 1 percent resorted to revision surgery. On the other hand, one percent experienced a heart attack. It was also found that hospitalizations within a year of the procedure were common as 27.1 percent of patients experienced it.
Dr. Adams suspected that the difference in the results may have been due to several reasons. One was that it could be due to the difference of the methods used in measuring the diabetic patients’ glycemic status, and the other was that the diabetic patients were healthier.
