Located on the Panar Laban rock face, Via Ferrata begins at 3,411 mtrs and ends at 3,776 mtrs above sea level; and provides an alternate route to access the top of Mt Kinabalu. Approximately 1.2 kms long, it takes around 4-5 hours to traverseand caters to all levels of experience, from beginners to intermediate hikers and experienced climbers. No prior experience is required; you can climb Via Ferrata as long as you are between 10 and 70 years of age with a minimum height of 1.3m, are fit and healthy, not afraid of heights, and would like to savour a totally new experience. Via Ferrata attracts huge crowds; so book well in advance. Walk-in customers are taken depending on the availability of slots. Various itineraries are available, and the most popular are Walk the Torqfor novice climbers and family groups, and Low‘s Peak Circuit for seasoned climbers. Another must-try is the 5-day Alpine Rock Climbing programme.

For serious mountain climbers, Mt Kinabalu can be a challenging mountain climb and you should be physically fit to enjoy the experience. The Alpine Guides Association and Mountain Torq recommend you start preparing at least 2 to 3 months before your trip and do outdoor cardiovascular exercises such as running, cycling and biking. Engage in cardiovascular sports at least twice a week, for at least 2 hours per session.
