“In Abu Dhabi, due to the shortage and growing demand, the Emirate alone would need additional 3,100 doctors by 2020.” This according to Alpen Capital’s recent report on the state of the healthcare sector in the GCC. The healthcare industry is growing at a rapid pace across the GCC thanks in large part to a rapidly increasing population, a growing incidence of disease, expanding infrastructure and a sharp jump in insurance coverage of the population.
Many GCC nations face a distinct shortage of staff in the coming years. Research undertaken by the Kuwait Life Sciences Company shows that while the UAE, for example, has 1.7 physicians per 1000 population (the GCC average being 2.1).
There are 37 so called ‘mega hospital’ projects in the GCC region that have been announced with a combined cost of over 100 million US Dollars. Expected to be completed in 2020, they will require a huge amount of new staff such as doctors, nurses and pharmacists as well as lab technicians and other specialised roles. Indeed, it is estimated that the region will need at least 30,000 new doctors, 66,000 nurses, 8,000 pharmacists and over 37,000 other specialised staff in order to maintain its current staffing ratio.
Given a lack of ‘home grown’ medical staff, the region will continue to rely on expatriate medical staff to meet this staff shortfall for the foreseeable future. This makes the GCC an extremely attractive market for potential job seekers in the medical sector. Indeed, the region offers a significant opportunity for trained professionals from across the globe with vacancies from the lower levels all the way up to top level medical directorships.
Given the high quality of care provided in the GCC, it looks set to remain an extremely popular choice for doctors, nurses and other health professionals for the long term. Healthy Change is poised to ease the transition for both job seekers and those doing the hiring to meet the challenge of providing top quality care in the GCC.
