Dr. Buckwalter added that elite athletes engage in physically demanding, challenging sports. This makes them more susceptible to repetitive joint injuries. Osteoarthritis is otherwise known as the wear and tear arthritis.
It develops when the cartilage that cushions the joints wear down. This results in friction between bones, which also leads to swelling, pain, and limited range of motion.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 27 million individuals in the United States had osteoarthritis.
A study was published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. It involved 700 retired Swedish retired athletes between the ages 50 and 93 years old. The participants of the study played professional and Olympic level sports.
Nearly 1,400 men who were in the same age range exercised a little or not at all. It was found that elite athletes were more susceptible to hip or knee arthritis by 85 percent. In athletes who had joint surgery, the risk was doubled.
The increased risk was associated with high contact sports such as handball and soccer as well as in ice hockey players.
Individuals who want to be in great shape may engage in activities that do not put them at risk of injury. Some of these activities are cycling, moderate running, swimming, and yoga.
