Have you ever wondered if those expensive workout supplements you’ve been buying actually work? Or better yet, are they even safe? The supplements industry gets a lot of bad press for off label steroids & amphetamine like compounds that have been found in top selling workout supplements. These tainted supplements are dangerous to consumers and leaving a dark cloud over the supplement industry. 

With the proper diet & the right exercise routine losing unwanted weight can become a reality if you stick to your program. But as Americans we want more… We demand more… So we turn to the supplements industry to help us build stronger muscles, workout with more intensity, & burn off our unwanted fat faster. 

There are hundreds maybe even thousands of workout supplements on the market. There is a specially formulated supplement for each of the aforementioned actions above, but there may be unintended consequences to taking some of these products. 

Craze for example, is a top pre workout supplement from a company called Driven Sports and was voted best new supplement by bodybuilding.com for 2012. Craze can be found everywhere from GNC to Wal-Mart, but it can also be found on a short list of products that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has flagged for providing more than what the label suggests. Lab tests have detected an undisclosed amphetamine-like ingredient in Craze that can lead to unwanted health problems and cause failed drug tests.Driven Sports denies these negative claims about their product, but it’s not the first time the company’s owner has come under scrutiny. 

The supplements industry is a $30 billion a year giant with little oversight from the Federal Government. So how should a cautious consumer act in this climate? 

Say you want to shed some extra pounds? You start a workout program and began taking a workout supplement to help you reach your goals. How do you know that it’s safe? The label isn’t going to say this product may kill or harm you. But how do you know for sure, should you go to your doctor with your supplements in hand and get his loosely credible opinion on what’s safe? Probably not, so there’s got to be a better way. 

I spoke with Sean Fernandez CEO of HIT Supplements. Sean is one of the good guys in an industry that has shady characters on the peripheral. Sean says “one of the biggest mistakes people make when doing any workout or exercise routine is that they don’t feed their body enough protein.” Sean goes on to say “protein before and after every workout is the key to inciting new muscle growth, speeding the repair of muscle tissue, and gaining lean muscle mass.” 

So maybe we don’t need all these designer workout supplements, maybe all we need is more protein. There’s certainly plenty to pick from when it comes to protein supplements. They come in all forms, shapes, and sizes. And like anything, you should do your research and decide what is best for you. Always take into account your current health and activity levels before using any product and don’t be a fool. If the label makes claims that sound too good to be true, then it probably is, and if you end up taking something that makes you feel weird, stop taking it. That’s your body’s way of warning you. 

Oh, and one last piece of advice from the Sean at H.I.T. Supplements. He says “anyone hoping to gain “the body of their dreams” needs to start by eating smaller healthier meals, and that eating every two-three hours will jump-start your metabolism so that burning fat and building muscle will happen more efficiently.” That sounds like good advice. Smaller healthier meals, why didn’t I think of that.
